How to Transfer WAEC Certificate to Another State

The West African Examination Council, WAEC, allows candidates who have relocated from the state where they wrote their exams to transfer their certificates.
In this article, you will learn about the process of transferring your WAEC certificate from one state to another.
What type of WAEC Certificates Can Be Transferred?
It is worth noting that not all types of WAEC certificates can be transferred. The examination council accepts transfers for only WAEC private exams (WAEC GCE). This is because WAEC SSCE certificates are returned to the school where you wrote the exams while WAEC GCE certificates remain with WAEC.
Also, WAEC GCE exams written from 2019 and above can be transferred by applying online while the process of transferring WAEC exams written from 2018 and below has to be done physically.
Once the transfer is approved, the certificate will be sent to the WAEC office of the state of your choice.
How to Transfer WAEC Certificate (2019 and Above)
Follow the steps below to transfer your WAEC GCE certificate for exams written in 2019 and above;
Step 1: Visit the WAEC Certificate Request Page
The West African Examination Council has a dedicated page for handling certificate requests. You can visit the WAEC certificate request page here.
Step 2: Enter your Examination Details
While on the page, click on “request certificate”. See the image below.
Enter your WAEC GCE examination number, and select the exam year and the exam diet (first or second series). Note that the first series is WAEC GCE exams done within January/February while the second series is done around November/December.
Click on continue when you are done.
Confirm that your name appears on the next page before proceeding to the next step.
Step 3: Enter your Contact Details and Pickup Location
WAEC may reach out to you during the transfer. Enter your phone number and a valid email address that you check often.
In the pickup location option, select the state to which you want the certificate to be transferred. Click on submit when you are done.
A pop-up will appear for you to confirm the information that you provided. Click on “yes” to continue.
Step 4: Make Payment
Before you make payment for the WAEC certificate transfer, it is good to copy the reference number as you will need it later on. Copy the reference number and save it in a notepad of your choice.

The WAEC certificate portal accepts only online payments.
Scroll down to the bottom where you can see the payment methods option. Select online payments and click on make payments.
The WAEC certificate transfer costs 10,600.
Enter your card details to complete your payment.
Step 5: Track Request Status
This feature helps you to know the progress of your WAEC GCE certificate. To track your certificate request status, you will need your WAEC GCE examination number and the reference number you copied in Step 4.
Visit the WAEC certificate transfer homepage. Click on “Check Request Status”. Enter your examination number and reference number in the appropriate field then click on check status.
You will be notified when your certificate gets to the location you chose.
Step 6: Collect your Certificate
Your WAEC certificate will arrive at the WAEC office of the state you chose within 10 to 30 days. When your certificate arrives, visit the WAEC office with your national identification slip or any other means of identification to collect your certificate.
How to Transfer WAEC Certificate (2018 and below)
If you did your WAEC GCE exam in 2018 or below, you must visit a WAEC office to transfer your certificate to another WAEC office.
To do this, simply visit any WAEC office close to you or you could send someone to help you do it.
Go along with the following documents;
- A copy of the result.
- Means of identification.
- Certificate transfer fee
- Affidavit from a court (if someone is representing you)
How to Transfer WAEC SSCE Certificate
After the conclusion of the WAEC senior secondary school certificate examinations, the WAEC SSCE certificates are sent to the secondary school where the candidate wrote their exams.
If you want to transfer your WAEC SSCE certificate, you have to send someone to visit the secondary school where you took the exam.
Some schools may require that a letter is written by the candidate requesting for the certificate transfer while other schools may prefer a video call.
Once your representative has collected the certificate, they can send it to your location through courier services like GIG Logistics. Do not send your certificates through unregistered courier services.
