How to Apply for Nigerian International Passport (2023)

Nigerian international passport is your opportunity to enjoy international travel and move on with different cultures, letting you travel anywhere, anytime in the world in the aspect provided you have the correct visa. The international passport is not similar to the ECOWAS passport, which will only grant travel entry into 15 West African states. 

As a Nigerian student seeking scholarships, you need to have a Nigerian international passport ready pending when you will get a scholarship. It is not advisable to only apply after getting your scholarship.

If you need to apply for a new passport, the Nigerian Immigration Services (NIS) now only issues electronic passports (e-passports) for newly applicants. 

As an ordinary citizen, you can apply for a Standard e-passport (green cover), while the official e-passports (blue cover) are meant for government officials and Nigerian diplomats.

Cost of Nigerian international passport

The payments for the Nigerian international passport must be made online, in maybe naira or U.S. dollars. Please know that cash payments are not accepted.

There are two different categories when it comes to pricing for the Nigerian international Passport. The first category is as follows;

1. People applying from Nigeria.
2. People applying from outside Nigeria.

Requirements for the Nigerian International Passport

The requirements depend on the age of the applicant. You can check out the requirements below;

For Adults (18 years and above):

1. Completed passport application form
2. Two recent passport-size photographs
3. Proof of payment
4. Letter of ID from local government/ state of origin (valid staff ID card attached)
5. Birth certificate
6. Completed Guarantor’s form (with a photocopy of the data page of Guarantor’s Nigerian e-passport and one passport-size photograph of the Guarantor)
7. Marriage certificate (if applicable)
8. Name change affidavit (if applicable)

For Minors (below 18 years of age):

1. Completed passport application form
2. One passport-size photograph (signed on the reverse side by consenting parent/s)
3. Birth certificate
4. Evidence of Nigerian citizenship of parent/s
5. Letter of consent from both parents (valid court order if one parent is unavailable)
6. Proof of payment

How to Apply for the Passport Online

Visit the Nigerian Immigration Services ePassport application portal by clicking on this link.

Select the passport type you want to apply for of which the only option available for the passport type is the standard passport. You also have to select your processing country. The processing country is where you will attend the passport interview.

Click on start application at the bottom of the page to begin the application process.

On the next page, you have to enter more information about your passport. You have to choose if you are applying for a new passport or renewing an expired or damaged passport. Since we are applying for a new passport, we will select a new passport from the list of options.

Fill in all the necessary information, tick the captcha box and click on continue.

On the next page, you will fill out personal information about yourself. Information like your National Identification number, names, gender, occupation, etc.

Click on continue when you are done.

The next step is to fill in your contact information. Enter your phone number, house address and state of origin and local government of origin.

Fill out your next of kin information and submit. Preview all the information and make sure everything is correct.

The last part is to make payment. You can either pay now or pay later. However, without the payment, you cannot book an appointment,

If you are not paying now, click on confirm and pay later. Take note of the application number and reference number as you will need them to perform other transactions on the Nigerian Immigration Portal.

How to Print your Guarantor form for International Passport

If you are applying for a new international passport, you must download a guarantor form and give it to your guarantor to fill. You can get the guarantor form only after making payments for the passport.

If you have made payments follow the steps below to print your guarantor form;

Visit the Immigration website using this link.

Select continue if you are applying from Nigeria.

Now, select guarantor form from the list of options.

Enter the reference number you copied previously. In the “search by” option, select with search by date of birth or application number.

Tick the captcha box and click on continue.

How to Book an Appointment

Before your International passport will be approved, you will need to go to the passport office for biometrics and passport photo capturing. This is what the appointment entails.

You can book an appointment by visiting the appointment booking portal.

Enter your application ID and reference number and click on next. On the next page, you need to select the date you want to come for the appointment.

Note that you must make payment online before you can book an appointment.

Documents needed for Passport Appointment

While going for the passport appointment, you need to go with the following documents;

1. Your Local Government letter of identification.
2. Your Birth certificate/age declaration.
3. 2 recent colour passport photographs.
4. Guarantor’s form sworn before a commissioner of Oaths/Magistrate/ High Court Judge. You can do this at any court in Nigeria
5. Parents’ letter of consent for minors under 16 years.
6. A Marriage certificate where applicable
7. Police report (if you are applying for renewal of missing passport).

How to Track your Nigerian International Passport Application

After applying for the international passport, you can track the progress to know when it will be ready.

Follow the steps below to track the progress of your international passport;

Visit the passport tracking portal here.

Enter your application number and reference number.

Click on view application status.

If your application has been approved, it will display on the screen.
